
Land MANAGEMENT
We understand that one of the key aspects to any restoration project is quality native plant installation. Largescale (thousands of plants per day) native plant installation projects have honed our ability for efficient plant installation production and our technical approach.
NATIVE PLANT INSTALLATION
Our crews are skilled in native plant identification, optimal planting elevations, preferred planting techniques, and Phytophthora contamination prevention. Hanford has a great working relationship with reputable native plant nurseries and seed providers, and we work together to ensure quality products are provided to clients.
Expert native seed installation via hand-broadcasting, drill seeding, and hydroseeding. Hanford owns and operates our own seeding equipment in a range of designs which allows for remote access. Our crews ensure areas to receive native seed are properly prepared for optimal germination.
Proper and effective live harvest and installation techniques for riparian trees and shrubs, wetland and marsh plants. Native salvaged plant material harvest includes proper timing, sequencing, and staging to reduce stress on salvaged material.
Field nursery construction and management, including custom construction where space and infrastructure is limited.
Proper and appropriate tool selection based on type of planting and terrain. Equipment ranges from mechanical equipment for larger trees, various auger types, and blending other industries’ techniques or equipment where appropriate (e.g., agricultural cultivation and re-forestation).
Watering regime development, irrigation system installation, programming (in conventional controllers).
Irrigation experience includes more conventional-type landscaping systems, including hardlines, hard-wired controllers, in-ground features as well as remote-site drip and overhead sprinklers, fed by gasoline- or solar-powered equipment and tanks.
Watering regimes developed around seasonal cycles, with strong emphasis on deep and slow watering (to encourage vertical root growth) rather than constant shallow watering (less appropriate for California seasonal cycle).
Water regimes also designed with water efficiency in mind to reduce waste or leaks. Hanford owns and operates several platforms for watering by hand – water trailers, water trucks with various holding capacities, 4x4 flatbed trucks with custom tanks.
Additional planting techniques include proper water retention basin construction, appropriately sized plant holes to encourage root expansion, soil supplements (such as mycorrhiza or compost), and browse protection.
Mulching with proper application techniques to avoid rotting plant stems or crowns with material that is carefully sourced to avoid introduction of pathogens.
Phytophthora prevention through diligent tool, equipment, and PPE disinfection. We also work with nurseries to ensure plant stock material is grown in optimal conditions to prevent the spread of Phytophthora.
Staff are native plant installer experts, and can make informed suggestions to designers, owners, and clients regarding plant distribution, spacing, elevation and composition for optimal survivorship on-site.
NATIVE PLANT ESTABLISHMENT
From coastal wetlands to the mountain meadows, we understand the unique complexities and requirements necessary to foster productive natural landscapes. Our crews are highly skilled in retrieving the best tool (or treatment) for the task at hand.
Maintenance to support new plantings, including pruning, plant health assessments and supplements or soil amendments. Pruning and mowing to promote stimulation in perennials are important tools that Hanford uses to achieve high success, especially in grassland restoration.
Optimally timed non-native invasive species removal and control through mechanical and chemical methods to facilitate plant establishment.
Install and maintain native plant browse protection (ranging in scope from cages to deer fencing).
Irrigation system troubleshooting and maintenance including a thoughtful approach to irrigation management with a regime based on project-specific aspects and plant life cycle. Hanford ensures deep-watering to encourage vertical root growth and water-weaning to support independence after establishment period.
Browse cage construction, repairs, adjustment and management. Browse cages are built for longevity with heavy-duty materials, adequate support features and adjustment over time to avoid constant replacement and unwanted degradation of materials.
Consistent mulch replenishment over time and at seasonally appropriate times with clean-sourced material.
Vegetation monitoring support to inform plant establishment and site maintenance approaches. Monitoring tasks include photo monitoring, survivorship assessment, percent-cover assessments, and monitoring logs about restoration operations.
INVASIVE PLANT MANAGEMENT
Hanford employs a light on the land approach to invasive plant management, using a minimalistic approach and light tools used to facilitate native plants growth and reduce invasive plant spread (by reducing disturbance). Our crews employ focused weeding and careful identification of non-native invasive plants to avoid negative impacts to native vegetation.
Minimum disturbance approach to weed management facilitates natives and reduces spread of existing non-natives. This approach includes mechanical and chemical tools used to manage invasive plant species.
Understanding of different ecotypes and ecological cycles which enables us to closely time and plan invasive plant management in concert with plants’ vulnerabilities and life stages.
Effective understanding of plant life cycles and optimal timing for control efforts (e.g., mowing at height of flowering before seed set). Mowing for invasive plant management is a seasonally-dependent process – careful observation of target species ahead of mowing (to assess the latest possible moment to begin mowing) is key.
Extensive experience in limited-access and backcountry operations, including walking-in tools and equipment to remote sites.
In addition to Hanford being a fully licensed pest control business, we have many crew members with both their Qualified Applicators Certificates and Licenses. Hanford is compliant and well-versed in herbicide handling, mixing, application, and reporting.
Adaptive project management, including re-organizing and re-allocating resources to better fit invasive plant life cycles and changing environmental conditions. Our adaptive management approach includes working within the constraints of rigid budgets and contracting, which can create tight deadlines for thorough and effective treatment. This is why open communication and transparency about resources and timing is key to a successful project.

Invasive Weed Removal & Fire Protection
Serrano Weed Abatement–Woody Fuel Reduction
EL DORADO COUNTY - Contracted by Serrano to follow El Dorado County’s Wildfire Safety Plan to prepare the development for fire safe living conditions. Nestled in the western foothills of Eldorado County within an expansive oak woodland savannah. The community is in a high-risk fire area, with over 100 acres of natural open space adjacent to homes, parks and recreation areas. We cut and chipped small trees and other vegetative debris within a 30-foot defensible buffer around all property lines adjacent to wildland open spaces. Vegetation along trails and roadsides was cut back 2” or below. In total, Hanford string trimmed and chemically treated over 112 acres at Serrano.
Fuel Reduction & Invasive Plant Removal
MARIN MUNICIPAL WATER DISTRICT FUEL REDUCTION AND RESTORATION
MARIN COUNTY - Comprehensive removal of non-native weeds, small diameter Douglas fir trees, creation of defensible space and fuelbreak maintenance and construction, removal of woody species from grasslands, and native plant installation and maintenance. We provided specialized labor and equipment for implementation of watershed fuel reduction and restoration. Teams are specially trained in the proper and safe operation of gas-powered chainsaws, masticators and chippers. Careful avoidance of sensitive wildlife species and nests during clearing is an essential part of the work.
Habitat Restoration & Species Protection
BIOREGIONAL HABITAT RESTORATION–GRASSLANDS & RIPARIAN WEED MANAGEMENT
ALAMEDA COUNTY - We made significant, ecosystem-level improvements to habitat for rare and endangered species. The program includes the development of compensation sites to preserve, enhance, restore or establish approximately 2,050 acres of native habitat ranging from ponds and wetlands to serpentine and annual grasslands and coastal oak. Provided a full-time crew of specialists and equipment to perform weed management and other habitat restoration support activities across the entirety of the project area.
